The tree of life, take 2

The first man, tasting of the tree, made his abode in corruption; for, having
condemned himself by an inglorious rejection of life, he imparted a certain taint as a
corruption to the whole race.  But we mortals, gaining utterance through the tree of
the Cross, cry out: O all-hymned God of our fathers, blessed art Thou!
